Abstract:

The Pego cooling towers are components of a major thermal power plant presently under construction in Portugal. The design process was complicated by the fact that the design criteria had to be adopted from various codes. Altogether 144 load combinations for the serviceability and ultimate limit states had to be considered. The stability of the shell was verified by empirical methods. Finally, the global buckling load was determined for two different load scenarios. The results of the static, dynamic and stability analyses are discussed.
