Abstract:

Shortly after completion, the main span cables of the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam showed aerodynamic instabilities with large amplitudes. These instabilities were recognised as rain-wind-induced vibrations. Temporary measures were installed on the bridge, and a year later tuned hydraulic dampers were mounted as a permanent solution. The effectiveness of these measures was studied both numerically and experimentally. This paper deals with the numerical study and describes the relevant steps taken in the process, both in the time and in the frequency domains, using a finite element code.
