Abstract:

Development of an Innovative Composite Deck Slab for Railway Bridges.

The Institut für Tragkonstruktionen-Stahlbau at the TU Wien is currently developing a new and innovative steel-concrete-steel-sandwich plate. This plate provides a high load bearing capacity with an extremely slender construction height and was therefore originally intended for the use in replacement works of old railway bridges without ballast bed.
Earlier papers ([1], [2], [3], [4]) already described the principles of construction and fabrication as well as the basic load-bearing mechanism. Further, the numerical simulations and the analytical models which describe the global load-bearing behaviour were presented. These analytical models, the so called elastic shear connection models of two elastically coupled beams, do not include local effects in disturbance areas like the bearings or the areas of load application. Hence the actual paper will describe the derivation of a strut and tie model for a proper mechanical description of local effects in these areas.
