Abstract:

Integrative design in the digital process

Computational design, simulation and fabrication methods have been an indispensable means of design and construction for decades. Recent efforts are focused on linking previously isolated components: on the one hand, horizontally through the integration of different information of the various parties involved in consistent data models (Building Information Modeling, short: BIM), on the other hand, vertically along the entire process chain, from the early stages of design to the installation on site and management of the facilities. The aim is to strengthen the efficiency and reliability of design and construction processes. In addition this will lead to a profound change in the culture of design that will not only affect the interdisciplinary communication, but also the role of architects and engineers in the entire process of design and construction.
