Abstract:

"El Carrizo" bridge - Cantilever construction of a cable-stayed bridge deck using launching girders

The "El Carrizo" bridge is located on the road from Durango to Mazatlán, a route embodying the inter-oceanic link between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Coast. Its main structure is a cable-stayed bridge with its bridge deck executed by incremental cantilever method and a central pylon. The present article focuses on the construction process used in this stretch, as it represented the achievement of a major challenge in terms of both the complexity of the surrounding conditions and also the optimization achieved in the use of pre-existing resources and equipment. The requirements for construction in a very short space of time, together with the risks of importing tailor-made equipment for the construction of an incremental cantilever bridge led to the company opting for the adaptation of existing means available (launching girders for the construction of bridge decks with prefabricated beams), logically more suited to bridge types other than the one concerned with in this case.
