Abstract:

Myanmar lies between India, China and Thailand. It has a basic road network which needs to be rehabilitated and extended. A direct road connection crossing the delta of the Ayeyarwady river is now under construction from the capital Yangon to the town of Pathein. A major problem during construction has been the crossing of the many river channels. The solution described involved eight medium span steel truss bridges with lengths up to 150 metres with foundations on large diameter bored piles. These bridges were completed by the end of1990. A long-span bridge is now under construction, applying the same foundation technology.
