Abstract: |
The design and construction of the Rosenstein Tunnel was intended to minimize the effects on the environment, nature and groundwater during construction and operation. Part of this design agenda was a decision to equip the tunnel with a geothermal energy system to recover energy from the ground for the heating and cooling of the elephant house at Wilhelma zoo. The Rosenstein Tunnel is located in the spa water protection area of Stuttgart. The construction of the geothermal system was only permitted on the condition that it must be guaranteed that there is no threat to the groundwater due to leakage of heat transfer fluid, which led to increased constructive demands for the design and construction of the system. One of these demands was the protection of the pipes during construction and service. The heat exchange takes place at absorber pipes installed between the shotcrete shell and the inner lining. Niches were placed on both sides of the tunnel blocks to house the boxes for the distribution manifolds, valves, regulators as well as the measuring and control instruments. To measure the operating temperature, a temperature measurement section is installed in both tubes, which records the temperature of the tunnel lining and the surrounding soil. The detailed measuring results not only allow a precise monitoring and control of the system, but also enable scientific research into the relationship between the temperature, soil temperature and the production of energy over the lifetime of the system. |
