Abstract:

Chances and challenges of using Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) methods for heat and moisture transport simulation.

The simulation of complex details of building constructions imposes high demands on the numerical solution method. The article focuses on the Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) method. We introduce the direct solution technique and a block variant of this method and combine it with different numerical strategies: an ADI time stepping procedure and an ADI preconditioned Krylov subspace method combined with an implicit Euler time integration. In order to check capability of the different numerical methods we design two representative examples: the drying of a brick wall and a thermal bridge simulation. The results give an indication about the applicability of the numerical methods to highly nonlinear problems combined with discontinuous material properties.
