Abstract: The paper presents a parametric analysis of arch pedestrian bridges made by fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) pultruded profiles. In order to understand the performances of this type of structure for different span lengths, 30-, 40- and 50- meter span footbridges are analyzed. Some aspects concerning design and finite element analysis are explained. A finite element program has been developed which takes into account the shear strain influence on flexural-torsional response of FRP profiles. Numerical interpolations have been performed by using polynomial shape functions for both flexural and torsional displacements. Results of static and global buckling analyses are presented and the influence of shear deformations on deflection and critical loads is pointed out. Dynamic behaviour of footbridges has been investigated in order to evaluate the pedestrian-induced vibration frequencies, with special attention to low-frequency lateral vibration modes.
