Abstract:

Building envelopes are a combination of structure and cladding, relying on the co-ordination of geometric definition, structural engineering and facade design for their successful implementation. Through their inherent low mass and spanning efficiency, spatial structures contribute positively to the sustainability aspirations of designers and clients. However, it is possible to design even more efficient – and hence sustainable - enclosures through a truly holistic multi-disciplinary approach, considering and assimilating the various opportunities from geometric optimisation, spatial structural design, cladding materiality, environmental performance, and construction practicalities.
