Abstract: Possessing a saddle-shaped roof structure composed of cables and struts, a large-span stadium was investigated for its initial force design by means of a symmetry-based technique. By applying this technique to the stadium, a feasible pre-stress state was acquired and then was compared with a resultant state from the finite element software EASY in order to verify the validity. The two results were in good agreement with each other. It was found that in contrary to common spoke structures with flat inner hoops, this particular stadium has a rather different pre-stress distribution. Specifically, a marked variation was noticed in the pretension values of hoop cables with a coefficient of variation (CV) up to 17.5%, and its upper and lower hoop cables held a contrary trend in pre-stress patterns. This sharp stress fluctuation could result in serious troubles in the construction process attracting careful attention. Furthermore, it is worth noting that despite of the small pretension values of inner added cables, they are indispensable for maintaining the saddle-like shape which sets itself apart from the other spoke structures.
