Abstract: To mark the event of the 2006 winter Olympic Games, the Turin Olympic committee chose this design for a passerelle of 400m length linking the Mercati Olympic village with the existing Lingotto development spanning 150m across the main railway lines. The architectural statement is based on the dynamic structural expression of the arch, suspension cables and deck. The red steel arch, a symbolic gateway, 75m high, gently leans over the tracks so as to optimise the geometrical configuration of the cables, its height governed by the critical angle of the longest ones. The parabolic form of the arch is inspired by the arches of the Mercati hall. The arch also leans laterally slightly to optimise the plan angle of the suspension cables with respect to the steel deck as it's curved path swings from the central axis of the Mercati gull wing hall toward it's destination of the existing Lingotto elevated walkway. The resulting curve creates an original visual dynamic in a dialogue with curve of the arch itself. A countercable is introduced to correct the torsional tendency created by the curving deck and is exploited to create a vertical component of force that helps to stiffen the deck.

The paper will discuss the architectural and structural design. Construction difficulties will be reviewed, such as specialist foundations, fabrication, erection of the arch and deck over the railway lines and cable tensioning. Conscious of recent difficulties in footbridge design response to dynamic issues such as pedestrian excitation and aerodynamic stability, the tender design included wind tunnel studies and specialist damper studies and the paper will review practical difficulties in the implementation of the theoretical design intent encountered during the project development and construction process.
