Abstract:

Glacier Skywalk – Glass-floored Observation Platform

At Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a stunning new tourist attraction, the Glacier Skywalk, was constructed in 2013 in a race against the Canadian winter. The cliff-edge walkway, which ends in the Glacier Skywalk is owned and operated by the tourist company Brewster Travel Canada. 280 m above the Sunwapta Valley, the barrier-free glass-floored skywalk offers visitors an exhilarating panoramic view on the surrounding mountains, glaciers and into the glacier-carved valleys. Within a 6 month period, the planning, manufacturing and supply from Germany as well as the installation procedure on site was finalized. During this time, additional considerations regarding the steel installation, glass floor body and the incorporation of the glass wind deflectors had to be taken into account.
