Abstract: This paper deals with the assessment of the remaining service life of the oldest existing wrought-iron railway bridge in continental Europe. This bridge is part of a railway line currently under investigation for future use by the Zurich suburban railway. The evaluation, based on actual loads and fracture mechanics methods, has shown that this 135 year old bridge is still safe and serviceable for many years to come.
