Chronology
| July 1997 | The Scottish Government publishes a white paper detailing the intentions for the parliament building to become a symbol for Scottland. |

| September 1997 | The public votes in favor of a Scottish Parliament. |
| 1998 | A site at the foot of the historic Royal Mile is chosen as the home of the Scottish Parliament. |
| 6 July 1998 | Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT) in partnership with RMJM Scotland Limited (EMBT/RMJM), winners of the design competition, are appointed to design the new Parliament building. |
| April 1999 | Pre-construction work begins to make the site ready by summer. |
| July 1999 | All demolition work is completed so that construction may begin. |
| July 2000 | Enric Miralles dies after surgery to remove a brain tumor. |
| September 2000 | Auditor General makes a number of recommendations to improve the management of the Holyrood project in a report to the parliament. |
| October 2000 | Work on the assembly and the committee tower begins. |
| January 2001 | The MSP building is topped out. |
| January 2004 | MSP building and Queensberry House are completed. |
| August 2004 | First staff move into the complex. |
| 7 September 2004 | First debate is held. |
| 9 October 2004 | Official inauguration of the new parliament building by Queen Elizabeth II |
