Chronology

May 1868

The final dimensions of the bridge are determined and eight contractors are asked to send in proposals. Only two contractors respond: Société Lucien Van der Elst et Cie (Braine-le-Compte) offers to build the bridge for 17 500 Francs and Etabl. Cail et Halot et Cie (Brussels) for 10 950 Francs. The latter bid is accepted and the contract awarded for a scheduled completion in May 1869. The completion is however pushed to a later date due to delays in producing the iron wire cables at the Gateshead plant where they are ordered.

August 1869

Opened to the public after being tested for 24 hours with a test load of 3.0 kn/m2.

1971

Renovation after discovery of corrosion in the one of the main cables (50% damaged) and in cross beams and railing.

1976

The bridge is dismantled, cable, railing and deck are replaced with steel elements.
