Buys the patent rights for New England for William Howe's truss system.

Lake Shore Road truss bridge collapses at Ashtabula. The train plunges into a ravine killing 92 people and injuring 67. Stone was later accused of ignoring advice of professional engineers who thought the span of the bridge too long.

11 May 1883

Amasa Stone commits suicide.
